Fine Furnituremaker

Hi I’m Adrian and was born in the Netherlands in 1958. My path to become a furniture designer/maker wasn’t a particular direct one. Initially I studied Food Technology, followed by Horticulture and then I worked as a Landscaper Designer in Holland and Canada. I then studied engineering while working for the water authority in the south of Holland.  I have always had an affinity with wood and particularly with trees. As a young boy I would find myself fascinated with some of the beautiful grain patterns on the split blocks of wood that I was chopping for the fireplace, and dreaming that instead of wasting it to be burnt that it could be used in a more respectable way.

Before completing primary school, I had already acquired some essential hand tools to work with wood such as a plane and a set of chisels. Even though there was not much to boast about in those early days, I did continue on to make simple pieces of furniture in the late seventies while attending Uni in Holland. At this stage it was merely a hobby and an urge to create my own furniture. I was familiar with working in ordinary pine and it was not until moving to Australia in 1994 that my latent hobby received a huge spark after discovering the beautiful timbers of the southwest of Western Australia.

Initially I immersed myself into any available literature to improve my skills and slowly started producing small pieces of furniture. These were put on consignment in a few galleries in the south west and Perth. I was astounded that these items would sell to the most remote places in the world, which boosted my confidence and soon I felt confident tackling bigger and more challenging pieces. Now, after working as a designer/maker of fine furniture for almost 20 years, I have decided it was time to create my own retail outlet and workshop. The trading name ‘Adrian van den Ouweland Fine Furniture Manufacturing and Design’ was not only too long but also difficult to remember and hence the new name ‘Treeton Fine Wood Studio’ was created in 2014; Treeton being the name of the area.  The new building combines the workshop and showroom and is located in Cowaramup, right in the heart of the Margaret River wine region.

Custom & Bespoke Fine Furniture, crafted from the South West's Finest Timbers

At Treeton Fine Wood Studio I’d like to think that I do everything possible to come to the desired outcome for my custumers; from sales directly off the floor to custom made furniture designed and tailored to your needs.  I will always make time to work out together with you what the best solution is for your furniture requirements.

The studio displays an array of work which is for sale but all items can be tailor made to suit the client’s particular situation. The furniture is being shown in settings as you would find it at your own home.  There is a range of smaller items on show, most importantly my hugely popular ‘chef’s end grain cutting boards’. There is a large bank of photos of past and present work to be seen and to inspire you as it displays a diverse range of furniture.

I tend to work primarily in the local timbers of this region which are Jarrah, Marri, Blackbutt and Sheoak. These are all beautiful hardwoods and are highly regarded for their qualities to make furniture that will last for generations.

I have a range of timber in stock to choose from but if you would like to utilise your own quality timber, I would be happy to work with it. I have had quite a few customers in the past that have provided timber from their own farm, which make the finished pieces so much more special.

In the event that you decide to have an item custom made to suit your specification, I will provide you with a sketch, accompanied with a firm quote so all parties know what to expect.

Included in this quote can be a price for transport and insurance. It’s my pleasure to find a suitable solution to take care of this to anywhere in the world.

Timber Surfacing

If you have a timber slab that needs to be flattened, I offer a timber surfacing service; I can surface slabs of up to 3.2m long by 1.5m wide. Price is worked out per square meter and also depends on flatness of your timber. Please contact me for a price indication.

Local Timbers: Responsibly Sourced & Respectably Transformed

The timbers I use are all local to the South West of Western Australia and are milled from either trees that were blown over by winter storms, (main source of Marri and Blackbutt), or old dead trees from farmland and private land holders (main scource of Jarrah).

Old dead Jarrah trees provide timber with the richest dark colour. I am an advocate of using this resource the best possible way and I think locking up the carbon of these beautiful trees into quality furniture is a fantastic way.

“Please contact me to discuss your unique Fine Furniture requirements.”
